뉴잉글랜드 한인 미국시민협회 (회장 이경해, 이사장 김성군)가 오는 4월 14일 토요일 오후 6시 렉싱턴에 위치한 엘크스 클럽 (Lexington Elks Club 959 Waltham St, Lexington, MA 02421)에서 차세대 정치 인턴십 모금 만찬에 초대합니다.
시민협회의 연중행사인 정치모금 만찬 이번 21회 행사에 부디 참석하셔서 저희 차세대들에게 우리의 든든한 후원의지와 성원을 보여주시길 간곡히 부탁드립니다.
시민협회는 지난 1998년 부터 2017년까지 총87명의 인턴들을 배출하였고, 올해에는 특별히 대학생 2명, 고등학생 5명 인턴 후보자들이 저희 인턴쉽 프로그램에 신청하였습니다.
올해에도 찰리 베이커 매사추세츠 주지사 사무실을 비롯해 미쉘 우 보스톤 시의회 의장 사무실등에 인턴들을 보낼 예정입니다.
시민협회는 지난 21년동안 총 87명의 대학생과 고등학생 정치인턴에게 소정의 장학금을 전달해왔으며, 선발된 인턴들에게는 여름방학 6주 ~ 8주 동안 주지사, 연방상원의원 및 시의원 사무실에서 인턴쉽을 할 수 있는 프로그램을 운영하고 있습니다.

Every year, KACL hosts a fundraising event to support our Political Internship Program. Funds raised at the event ensure the continuation and improvement of internship opportunities for young Korean – Americans, an indispensible avenue to increase our political presence and strength in American politics.

Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood was first elected to the Michigan Senate in 2010 and was reelected to his second four-year term on November 4, 2014. Senator Hopgood represents the Downriver and Western Wayne communities of Belleville, Brownstown, Flat Rock, Huron, Rockwood, Romulus, Sumpter, Taylor, Van Buren and Westland. Prior to joining the Michigan Senate, Hopgood served six years in the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the communities of Taylor and Romulus. Senator Hopgood has the distinction of serving as the first Korean-American to hold state office in Michigan.
Senator Hopgood serves on the Appropriations Committee, where he is the Minority Vice-Chair of Agriculture and Rural Development, Environmental Quality, Natural Resources and the K-12 School Aid and Education Sub-Committees. He also serves on the Health Policy Committee and is the Minority Vice-Chair of the Energy and Technology Committee, and the Education Committee.
Senator Hopgood attended Holland Elementary School, Hoover Junior High School and Truman High School in Taylor, MI where he graduated with honors in 1992. He went on to attend the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where he obtained his Bachelors of Arts in 1996 while majoring in Political Science.
While at the U of M, Senator Hopgood interned in the Washington, D.C. office of former Congresswoman Lynn Rivers. After graduating, he worked for the Michigan State AFL-CIO as a Labor Coordinator during the 1996 campaigns. His candidate for state representative won in one of the closest races statewide and helped return the Michigan House to Democratic control.
At the beginning of 1997, Senator Hopgood began working for the House Democratic Policy Staff. He was able to work on a variety of legislative issues, including K-12 education. In 1999, he joined the legislative office of then State Representative Raymond Basham. While in Rep. Basham's office, Senator Hopgood was engaged in several important legislative issues and provided many constituent services for the 22nd House District.
Senator Hopgood is a founding member of Michigan's Asian Pacific American Legislative Caucus. Hopgood sponsored legislation to form the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission in 2008 and has advocated for many issues of importance to the growing Korean and Asian Pacific American communities in Michigan. Senator Hopgood is a member of the Michigan Democratic Party, the Council of Asian-Pacific Americans, APIAVote-MI, the Wolverine Caucus, the Arts Caucus, the Children’s Caucus, the Michigan Center for Civic Education, Michigan Youth In Government, the Quad Caucus and the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators.
Senator Hopgood has been engaged in several volunteer efforts which included child literacy programs, holiday meal deliveries and low-income assistance programs. Some of his signature district events include an Annual Veterans Day Free Movie Event and Bicycle Helmet Giveaway for the constituents in Senate District 6.
Senator Hopgood was born in Inchon, South Korea and was adopted by Diane and the late Rollie Hopgood at 19 months of age. Hopgood lives in Taylor, Michigan with his wife, Sunhwa, and their two children.
